Discuss Technology (P2, U24)

LO1 (Unit 24): Understand the products that are produced within and across media industries

P2 (Unit 24): Explain the use of converging technologies within an identified sector

Convergence is the term used to describe the modern development of media products and platforms. An example of this involves technological convergence. For example, music, television and news can now be accessed through smart-phones.
Not only can content be accessed through different devices, but it can also be uploaded onto various storage drives (such as Google Drive) where uploaded content can be accessed instantly, from any location and device.

An example of convergence in new technology includes how websites are now able to be optimised to adapt format depending on the device it is being viewed on. For example, if a user is visiting a website on a laptop or computer then the width may be greater, and features may be presented in a larger font. If a website is being viewed from a smartphone then content may be more condenced, meaning the format will be presented narrower and the text will be smaller. This ensures that the interactivity between the user and the website is catered to the individuals needs, so that they can access the site with ease. To add, in relation to advertising and marketing, websites not only cater to the device it is being viewed on, but also provide promotional tools which relate to the interests of the user, making them more likely to tap/click them. For example, on websites it is more likely that banners will be used to promote and advertise various brands/companies, as they are widespread and can be clearly presented on a desktop format. On mobile devices (tablets, smartphones, etc), it is more likely that advertisements such as pop-ups would be presented as they are more condensed and there fore easier to view on a smaller screen.
